Total telecom subscribers in India marginally declined at
the end of April 2013 to 897 million as compared to the previous month,
according to a new report.
The number of subscribers were at 898 million at the end of
March 2013, the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) said in
its latest report.
Total number of wireless subscriber were at 867.02 million
and wireline subscriber base was at 29.99 Million at the end of April.
Total Broadband subscriber base has seen a minute increase to 15.09 mn.
Here are some key findings from the report.
Overall subscribers outlook
The share of urban subscribers has decreased to 60.71% from
61.11% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased from 38.89% to
39.29% in the month of April 2013.
Subscription in the urban areas decreased from 548.80 million in February 2013, to 544.55 million at the end of April 2013.
Subscription in rural areas increased from 349.22 million to 352.47 million during the same period.
Delhi leads the list for overall teledensity by circle, by a huge margin, with 220.20 followed by Tamil Nadu with 108.26.
Wireless Segment (GSM,CDMA,FWP) outlook
Total wireless subscriber base decreased from 867.80
million in March 2013 to 867.02 million at the end of April 2013. This
decline is largely due to disconnections by some of the service
providers.
The share of urban wireless subscribers has decreased from
60.53% to 60.11%, where as share of rural wireless subscribers has
increased from 39.47% to 39.89%.
Wireless subscription in urban areas decreased from 525.30 million in March 2013 to 521.18 million at the end of April 2013.
The wireless subscription in rural areas increased from 342.50 million to 345.85 million during the same period.
Private operators hold 88.02% of the wireless market share
(based on subscriber base) whereas BSNL and MTNL and the two PSU
operators hold only 11.98% of the market share.
Private player Bharti leads the pack with a market share of 21.78%, closely followed by Vodafone with 17.74%.
Videocon, with 6.48%, has seen the highest growth in subscriber base followed by Idea with 1.06%.
North East and J&K region saw the highest growth area wise in total subscribers.
Bihar followed by Mumbai saw the highest decline in total subscribers, area wise.
Mobile Number Portability outlook
91.73 million subscribers have submitted their requests to
different service providers for porting their mobile number, by the end
of April 2013. Bringing the MNP request number for April 3012 to 2.03
million subscribers.
In MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India) maximum number
of requests have been received in Rajasthan, with 8.80 million
requests, closely followed by Gujarat, with 7.85 million requests.
In MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) maximum number of
requests have been received in Karnataka, with 10.90 million requests,
followed by Andhra Pradesh Service area, with 8.30 million requests.
Wireline Segment Outlook
The share of urban subscribers has increased from 77.78% to
77.93%, where as share of rural subscribers has declined from 22.22% to
22.07%.
BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU operators hold 79.08% of the Wireline market share.
MTNL has seen the highest growth in subscriber base.
BSNL has seen the highest decline in subscriber base.
Broadband (? 256 Kbps download) outlook
Total Broadband subscriber base has increased from 15.05
million at the end of March 2013 to 15.09 million at the end of April
2013.
There are 162 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country which are providing broadband services, as on April 30th 2013.
The top 3 leaders by market share are BSNL (9.94 million), Bharti Airtel (1.40 million) and MTNL (1.09 million).
